As Obama Administration battles digital piracy, the issue lands on the doorstep of the White House with Mrs. Obama's forthcoming project...Crown Publishing promised booksellers a major social media campaign to promote First Lady Michelle Obama's forthcoming book American Grown, and it has launched a Facebook page ahead of the May 29th release date. It's fairly low on updates, but has more than 1,900 "likes." Yet even as the Obama Administration has attempted to battle digital piracy and boost privacy initiatives, the issue has hit the doorstep of the White House. Mrs. Obama's book now has a "faux" Twitter account that uses the title of her book as a handle, and a "faux" website, too, which are not run by Crown Publishing. (Above: The Facebook page)
A division of Random House, Crown also publishes President Obama's books. The First Lady's lavishly photographed book, her first outing as an author, tells the story of her White House Kitchen Garden and other gardens in the US, and includes recipes and planting tips. The faux Twitter account, @AmericanGrown, uses the book jacket as a bio photo and as a background for the page. It links to a website with the address MichelleObamaAmericanGrown.com. The site is titled "Michelle Obama American Grown CookBook." The posts are signed by Rachid Ajmal, who lists his location as Morocco on his own self-monikered Twitter account @ajmalrachid.
The Twitter "bio" for the @AmericanGrown account makes it easy to spot as a fake (sic): "Michelle Obama American Grown The First U.S Lady Book Allows You To Discover The White House Kitchen Secrets." There are 120 followers. (Above: A screenshot of the Twitter account)On his own Twitter account, Ajmal's bio reads (sic): "Rachid is Here, I like Interenet Marketing, SEO, Make Money Online, Clickbank, Affiliate Marketing and Blogging."
Mrs. Obama Tweets on @MichelleObama, where she signs her personal tweets with her initials "-mo." The account has 921,894 followers. Her childhood obesity campaign Let's Move! also has a Twitter, @LetsMove, with 36,418 followers. Last Thursday, the (real) website for Mrs. Obama's campaign, LetsMove.gov, unveiled a comprehensive new Gardening Guide for families, schools and communities.
