Store spokesman says "no disrespect" intended after neighbor protests and contacts media...After a resident of an Upper West Side neighborhood in Manhattan expressed outrage about a Whole Foods advertisement that used an illustration of President Obama to promote a sale for organic chicken, the store has removed it, with a spokesman saying "There was no disrespect meant at all."
Outraged store neighbor Woody Henderson contacted NBC 4 New York to complain about what he perceived as a racial slur, and the outlet reported the story. The sign appeared outside the doorway of the Whole Foods located on Columbus Avenue and 97th Street. It was created by a staffer, a "store artist" who uses "a variety of pop culture imagery to promote sales and events," NBC 4 said.
The sign was removed "once it was brought to our attention by a shopper that it may be perceived as offensive," the Whole Foods spokesman said.
"There are certain things that have been used to put down black people," Henderson said.
